We want to create the kind of salon experience you get in town, but in Dublin 15,” says Orla Deering, owner of Reba Reborn. “Locals built us, and we want to give something back. They don’t want to go into town, so we are bringing town to them.”
Reba Reborn is one of the two salons that Orla owns with her husband, John Deering. Childhood sweethearts, they opened their first Reba salon in Ongar village a decade ago, followed by a second in Rathborne.
The original Reba salon in Ongar had a total makeover last winter and became Reba Reborn, a 2,500sq ft salon and spa, where Orla’s eye for detail and ability to deliver diamond-standard service is key to everything.
“We had always been graded as a five-star salon, like any of the best salons in town,” she says, “but we needed to look like one.”
They turned the spacious salon into a modern, chic space and put five treatment rooms at the back. These include a two-chair pedi room, where the seats fully recline so that clients can enjoy a half-hour head massage while having their feet done. The spray-tanning room is clearly something Orla is proud of: “Some spray-tan rooms are basically just a shower,” she says, “but ours is this round room with LED lights and heaters and funky tiles. It’s a cool place to get a tan.”
Keeping the customer happy is at the heart of what Reba do. They encourage customer feedback and, crucially, they act on it. “We email every customer for their feedback,” Orla explains, “and that feedback comes to my phone, John’s phone and the five salon computers. If a customer gives anything lower than a five-star rating, we contact them right away to find out what went wrong. Then, every month, we put up all the feedback on the office wall and go through it with the staff.”
One of Orla’s greatest sources of pride at Reba is that most of the staff have been with them from the start. They have stayed and, if their 19,000-strong customer database is anything to go by, the customers stay too.
Both Reba salons have always had a loyalty card, but when Reba Reborn was launched, they tweaked it to a “treat” card. “People were using it for the bog-standard stuff,” says Orla, “instead of something special. So now you can have your two-week manicure on it, or a massage, or the Reborn Treatment, which is a blow-dry plus a head massage.”
“These days, people come from all over to us, but we are still all about keeping it local,” Orla says. “We want people to know that you don’t have to leave the outskirts of the city for good salon service; you don’t have to go to town if you don’t want to. We’re committed to Dublin 15. Even our coffee bar, Java Republic is local.”
Local doesn’t mean small, though, and as Orla prepares to launch the Reba app, and begins the revamping of her Rathborne salon into a second Reba Reborn, she’s thinking big. “It took a long time to get here and it was a struggle through the recession,” Orla says, “but nothing is going to stop us now. I believe we can do bigger and better and Reba Reborn is the start of that.”
Reba received an award for having the highest amount of 5 star reviews through our salon software system- Phorest. Clients receive an email from us when they leave the salon giving them an opportunity to rate us 1-5 and leave comments on the service that day on their visit, this helps us keep our service at 5 star and lets us know exactly how the client felt on that visit
In 2016 reba also received an award from RSVP Magazine for Best Customer service in Leinster region of Ireland. This was such a huge honour, we felt our attention to our clients was being recognised and rewarded
At Reba we like to be at the forefront of new Salon concepts, 6 months ago I started working on developing our Reba APP. We have always had our online booking system attached to our website which clients used a lot. Apps are so easy to use now and really help push even more online bookings so we were eager to design our own. We launched our APP 6 weeks ago and we are thrilled when the figures came back with at present 541 clients have downloaded it and are using it.
In January 2016 Reba Stylist Sinead Cullen beat thousands of young stylists in Ireland and England to receive a place on TIGI’s prestigious Youth Generation Team, this took place in TIGI’s London academy and ran over 9 months. Founder of TIGI Antony Mascolo and their artistic team took sinead through all aspects of fashion hair including editorial and runway looks. Sinead was also lucky enough to style the hair for 2 designers in London fashion week. John and myself where so proud of Sinead’s hardwork and 12 staff atteneded the TIGI finale show in Londons Cafe Paris in May.

Each year we set up an in-salon photographic competition between our staff to find The Look Of Reba, this winning look goes on to be used in all marketing material and editorial work for the year, Aisling Kenny won it this year and has been featured in RSVP Magazine, The Herald Paper, going forward the is a feature in image magazine and also the Sunday Life magazine
For the past 2 years we have done a retail Competition between all 40 staff to give them an opportunity to win a place to attend the all inclusive 3 day “Milkshake” European Hairshow in Portugal, we run this over 5 months and creates an amazing buzz amongst the staff and mostly increases our retail sales enormously!!
I would like to say personally how honoured myself and John would be to receive the title of Best Hair Salon in the Irish Hair and Beauty awards, as we feel our staff deserve it.

ColorpHlex protects and strengthens hair during the colour and bleach process, reducing damage and breakage.
THE COLORPHLEX DIFFERENCE
colorpHlex improves the strength and quality of the hair from the inside out. Scientifically formulated, colorpHlex uses a naturally derived vegetable protein molecule that penetrates the hair, reinforcing bonds during the color and bleach process. Clinical trials show that a small amount of colorpHlex added to hair color or bleach makes hair up to 4Xs stronger, significantly reducing breakage, returning hair to its natural healthy state. We recommend colorpHlex home care products for home use to extend salon results.
